PSG
The reigning champions do not appear to be on course for a big win in the final round of the French Ligue 1. They are far superior to the average Clermont team. Looking at the names of their players, the Parisians should be able to hammer almost all of their rivals in the national league. However, in the 12 last rounds of the league, they had only one big win (over modest Ajaccio, which was relegated to Ligue 2). Their other recent results include not-so-convincing victories over Auxerre (2-1) and Troyes (3-1), a 1-1 draw with Strasbourg, and a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Lorient.
Clermont
Clermont is a strong team and has a good chance of at least not conceding too many goals against the reigning champions. They have had a very good season for their level and are in the middle of the standings (8th place). In the worst-case scenario, they can only drop one place. Pascal Gastien’s team suffered only one defeat in the last nine league rounds (1-2 against Brest). At the same time, they have beaten strong teams like Reims, Lyon, and Lorient.
Prediction
Clermont has suffered only two major defeats in Ligue 1 this season, one of which came at the hands of PSG at the start of the season. However, they never lost by a large margin in 18 away matches.
Meanwhile, PSG failed to get a big win in 22 consecutive matches. Their players are now thinking about their vacations, so they will not be at their best in the last round.
