Eredivisie is the football championship of the Netherlands. The first tournament took place in 1956. Since the creation of the tournament, the format of the championship has changed several times. In the 2021/2022 season, 18 clubs are fighting for the championship title. Now let’s analyse the structure of the championship, the rules for determining places in the standings and the favourites of the 2021/2022 season.

If compared with the 2020/2021 season, three changes have occurred in the standings of Eredivisie. ADO Den Haag, VVV-Venlo and Emmen went to Eerste Divisie. ADO Den Haag has been in the elite division longer than other teams - 13 seasons. Their place in the Eredivisie was taken by Cambuur, Go Ahead Eagles and NEC. All teams match results and match stats are available on the official website of Eredivisie.
Tournament policy
The championship of the Netherlands is held according to the "autumn-spring" system. Teams play in two circles: one at their home field and one as guests. Each club plays in 34 rounds, playing twice with each opponent. Taking into account that there are 9 matches in one round, 306 matches per season are planned in the tournament schedule.
Eredivisie teams are fighting for three positions in the standings: championship, place in European competitions, preservation of positions. The tournament applies a three-point scoring system: three points are scored for a win, one for a draw and zero for a defeat. The champion of the tournament and the final position of the team in the standings are determined by the overall results of the club in the season. All points are summed up, and the clubs are placed from highest to lowest total score in the standings. In case of equality of points, three criteria are used:
- better goal difference in the season;
- the number of goal scored;
- head-to-head stats (points, goal difference).
If teams are equal by all criteria, the champion is determined in the play-off.
In addition to the championship, the teams are fighting to preserve their positions and participate in European competitions. Five teams from the Eredivisie advance to the European competition. The champion goes directly to the UEFA Champions League group stage. The Vice-Champion starts from the second round of the Champions Qualification. The bronze medallist will play in the Europa League. The 4th -7th team of the tournament will play two tickets to the Conference League. Playoff pairs 4-7 and 5-6. The winner of each pair of play-offs between the 4th -7th and 5th-6th teams is promoted to the European competition. The 17th and 18th regular season teams are relegated. The 16th Eredivisie club plays with the bronze medallist of Eerste Divisie in the play-offs.
Favourites and outsiders
In recent years, the Dutch championship has four teams that regularly fight for the championship title and participate in European competitions. The following teams will fight for the champion title:
- Ajax;
- PSV;
- Feyenoord;
- AZ Alkmaar.
The first three clubs are among the most award-winning teams of the tournament.
When making predictions for the games, it is important to know the outsiders of the championship. Newcomers Cambuur and Go Ahead Eagles got into the list of top losers. Heracles, Sparta, Twente and Zwolle have not the highest chances of retaining their positions in the elite group.

Features of bets
The Netherlands Championship is traditionally one of the highest-scoring football tournaments. The attacking style of play is instilled in the players at the academy, and the clubs continue to adhere to this strategy in all tournaments. In the 2020/2021 season, the average performance was 3.08 goals per game and this is not the limit. In the 2018/2019 season, the figure was 3.46 goals. The highest-scoring team of the last season was Ajax. The Amsterdam club scored 102 goals in 34 games. More than 70 goals were scored by PSV and AZ Alkmaar.
