Tournament policy
The Segunda regular championship is held in the “autumn-spring” format. The teams play two circles. During the season, the clubs play each with each at a home field and as guests. In total, the tournament schedule includes 42 rounds of 11 matches each. In total, the clubs play 462 matches during the season. The 2021/2022 season will take place from 13 August 2021 to 29 May 2022.
The position of the team in the standings is determined by the results of the matches. The champion of the tournament is the team with the maximum number of points scored among all teams. In one match, they can get 0-3 points: zero for a defeat, one for a draw, and three for a win. In the standings, the clubs are placed from highest to lowest total score. In case of equality of points, the position of the team is determined by additional criteria. The criteria are arranged in descending order:
- the number of points scored in head-to-head duels;
- head-to-head goal difference;
- goal difference in all matches of the season;
- the number of goals scored in the championship.
If teams are equal by all criteria, a play-off match is appointed. The winner of the match is ranked higher.
Segunda clubs fight for promotion and for non-relegation to the First Division. The champion and the vice-champion are promoted. The teams from 3rd to 6th place qualify for the third ticket to La Liga. In the 21/22 season, the sixth team of Segunda 20/21 will play in La Liga. 3-6 teams form play-off pairs, the 3rd plays with the 6th, and the 4th with the 5th. The winners play a head-to-head match. The play-offs are played both at home and road matches. Relegation to the First Division is easier. There are no play-offs and the 19-22 teams are relegated according to the results of the championship.
Favourites and outsiders
The list of favourites and outsiders in Segunda changes every season. This information is worth knowing when making long-term predictions for the games of the second division of Spain. The constant change of favourites and outsiders is associated with the addition of seven new teams to the tournament, including three from La Liga.
Traditionally, the list of the main contenders for winning the tournament is headed by clubs that have already played in the elite division. They have more experience, more expensive line-up and higher ambitions. In the 2021/2022 season, the group of favourites of the tournament includes:
- Real Valladolid;
- Sporting Gijón;
- Huesca;
- Malaga;
- Almería.
The list of main outsiders of the tournament includes Alcorcón, Zaragoza, Burgos, Lugo, Real Sociedad B and Cartagena.
The teams' chances of being promoted are directly related to the quality of the selected players. Real Valladolid has the most expensive line-up in the league. The top five also includes Almería, Leganes, Huesca and Girona. The three cheapest clubs in Segunda are Alcorcón, Lugo and Amorebieta. The total value of La Liga 2 is €433.33 million.
Betting trends
Main news of the league, results and schedule of matches, player stats, transfer changes and the standings are available on the official Segunda website. This data allows us to assess the strength of teams, and find patterns to the outcomes of matches.
Among the main betting trends are:
- low margins at bookmakers;
- teams' performance is lower than in La Liga;
- teams win more often in home games.
When choosing bets on teams that have left La Liga, it is important to evaluate the transfer campaign, changes of coaches and plans for the development of the team. Not always teams from the elite division try to return to La Liga in the first season.
