English Premier League (EPL) the main football tournament in England. The strongest professional clubs of the country are represented in the Premier League. The first tournament took place in 1992. Previously, the tournament was the First Division and was held since 1888. The format of the tournament has changed several times. Starting from 1995, 20 teams have been participating in the tournament. Now let’s consider the format of the championship, the standings, the list of teams and the number of matches in the season.
Participants in EPL
20 teams from 13 cities play in the 2021/2022 Premier League. London is represented by the maximum number of clubs — six. Every season, there are 3 new teams from the Championship.
The full list of the participants in the 2021/2022 EPL season is as follows:
- Arsenal
- Aston Villa
- Burnley
- Brighton & Hove Albion
- Brentford
- West Ham United
- Wolverhampton Wanderers
- Crystal Palace
- Leicester City
- Liverpool
- Leeds United
- Manchester City
- Manchester United
- Norwich City
- Newcastle United
- Southampton
- Tottenham Hotspur
- Watford
- Chelsea
- Everton
If compared with the 2020/2021 season, three changes have occurred in the standings. Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United were relegated to the Championship. Their places in the Premier League were taken by the leaders of the Championship of the last season: Norwich City, Watford and Brentford.
Tournament policy
The English Football Championship is held in the usual "autumn-spring" format for UEFA. The regular season is divided into two circles. During the tournament, teams play in a round-robin system and play one match at a home field and one match away with each opponent. The final position of the team in the standings is determined by the results and stats of all the games played. In case of equality of points, there are a number of additional criteria that determine the position of the team. The criteria are listed in descending order:
- difference in goals scored and conceded;
- the number of goals scored in the season;
- head-to-head results;
- goals in head-to-head duels in road games.
If teams are equal by all criteria, a play-off match is appointed. The winner of the match is ranked higher.
In total, the tournament schedule includes 38 rounds of 10 matches each. In total, the clubs play 380 matches during the season. The 2021/2022 season will take place from 13 August 2021 to 22 May 2022.
The Premier League clubs fight for the championship, a place in European competitions and the preservation of their positions. Five teams enter European competitions through the championship. The champion and three other clubs directly qualify for the Champions League. The fifth club will play in the group stage of the Europa League. Theoretically, the 6-7 teams of the Premier League can also qualify for European competitions. To do this, the top 5 club of the season must win the FA Cup and the English League Cup. In this case, the 6th team will play in the Europa League group, and the 7th will play in the Conference League qualification play-offs. 18-20 teams will be relegated to the Championship based on the results of the season.
Favourites and outsiders
The list of contenders for the title has not changed in recent years. Over the past five seasons, Liverpool and Manchester City have been fighting for the title of the best club in the Premier League. Both clubs are the main favourites to win in the 21/22 season. The two teams will fight for the title against:
- Manchester United;
- Chelsea;
- Tottenham.
The last three clubs have done a good job in the transfer market and the 21/22 season promises to be intense in terms of fighting for the championship. This information should be taken into account when making long-term predictions for the matches of the Premier League.
Among the main outsiders of the league are Watford, Norwich, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Newcastle. All three EPL rookies are at risk.

Betting trends
Main news of the league, results and schedule of matches, player stats, line-up changes and the standings are available on the official EPL website. The detailed statistics and information allows us to assess the strength of teams, their prospects and find patterns to the results.
Among the main betting trends are:
- Frequent rotation of the line-up. In England, teams play in two cup tournaments, the championship and European competitions;
- The performance of teams is higher than 2.7 goals per season;
- There are no obvious outsiders, as clubs earn a lot;
- A high coefficient for the victory of the favourite in the match.
When choosing teams for betting in the Premier League, it is important to evaluate the club's transfer policy, the calendar, changes on the coaching staff, and the results of the last 2-3 seasons.
