The 2. Bundesliga is the second-strongest division of football in Germany. The first tournament took place in 1974. The last changes in the championship format took place in 1992. 18 clubs take part in the tournament, 2-3 clubs can get a promotion. Now let’s consider the format of the championship, the standings, the list of teams and the number of matches in the season.
Participants in 2. Bundesliga
18 teams play in the German 2. Bundesliga. Each season, 4-6 new teams are promoted from the 3. Liga and are relegated from Bundesliga.
The full list of the participants in the 2021/2022 2. Bundesliga season is as follows:
- Werder
- Schalke 04
- Holstein
- Hamburger
- Fortuna
- Karlsruher
- Darmstadt
- Paderborn
- St. Pauli
- Nürnberg
- Erzgebirge
- Hannover
- Jahn Regensburg
- Sandhausen
- Dynamo Dresden
- Hansa
- Ingolstadt 04
- Heidenheim
If compared with the 2020/2021 season, five changes have occurred in the standings. The newcomers of the Second Bundesliga are Schalke 04 and Werder from the elite division. Dynamo Dresden, Hansa and Ingolstadt got promotion from the 3. Liga to the 2. Bundesliga.
Tournament policy
The format of the Second Bundesliga is the same as of the First Bundesliga. The season is held according to the classic UEFA "autumn-spring" system in two circles. Clubs play in a round-robin system, one home match and one road game. In total, the tournament schedule includes 34 rounds of 9 matches each. In total, the clubs play 306 matches during the season. The 2021/2022 season will take place from 23 July 2021 to 15 May 2022.
The final standings represent the sum of the points scored in all matches of the season. Germany applies a three-point system: three points for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. Based on the results of 34 rounds, the clubs are placed from highest to lowest total score in the standings. If two or more teams scored an equal number of points, the additional criteria for determining the stronger club are used. The criteria are listed in descending order as follows:
- the number of goals scored and conceded in the season;
- the number of goals scored;
- the number of point and goals scored in head-to-head duels;
- the number of goals scored in road games.
If teams are equal by all criteria, a play-off match is appointed.
The clubs of the Second Bundesliga are fighting for promotion and preservation of their positions. The champion and vice-champion advance to the elite championship. The third team of the 2. Bundesliga plays play-offs with the 16th Bundesliga team. The winner of the two-round matchup will play in the elite championship next season. The 17th and 18th teams are relegated to the 3. Liga. The 16th club is playing the play-offs with the bronze medallist of the 3. Liga.
Favourites/outsiders
The list of favourites of the Second Bundesliga is constantly changing. A tournament can have up to 6 changes per season, which is 33% of the total number of participants. Clubs that are relegated to the 2. Bundesliga from the elite championship do not always quickly return to the Bundesliga. In the 2021/2022 season, the fight for the championship and promotion will be between the following teams:
- Paderborn;
- Dynamo Dresden;
- Nürnberg;
- Werder;
- St. Pauli;
- Jahn Regensburg.
The outsiders of the season are traditionally league newcomers. Erzgebirge, Hannover, Ingolstadt, Hansa and Sandhausen got into the group of the main outsiders of the tournament.
The total value of the players in the clubs of the German Second Bundesliga is €379 million. The top three most expensive teams are Werder, Schalke and Hamburg. The three cheapest are Hansa, Erzgebirge and Ingolstadt. Main news of the league, player stats, transfer changes are available on the official website of the 2. Bundesliga, club websites and on social media accounts.
Betting trends
The Second Bundesliga is an extremely unpredictable tournament. Stability is not the right word to describe a tournament briefly. The instability of the results is associated with the constant changes of the number of participants, as well as the sale of players. 2. Liga clubs often sell footballers who distinguish themselves through the season. In this regard, it is not recommended betting on direct outcomes, even in matches with the participation of the tournament leaders.
The best option for betting on the 2. Bundesliga is betting on total. As in the Bundesliga, there are many high-scoring teams and there is a trend in betting on Total Over 2.5. Teams that try to shut the game out should be avoided. For the rest of the matches, you can play with Total Over 2.5, individual total 1.5, both teams will score, and a number of other bets related to goals scored. At a distance of 10 rounds, 3-5 teams are determined to claim a promotion. In the matches of these clubs, you can bet on a win. These features of the Second Bundesliga can be used to make the right match predictions.
