Bundesliga is the elite football championship of Germany. The first tournament took place in 1963. Bayern remains the most prominent club of the German Bundesliga with 31 titles. The first Bundesliga tournament was won by FC Köln. Now let’s consider the format of the championship, the standings, the list of teams and the number of matches in the season.
Participants in Bundesliga
18 teams play in the German Bundesliga. Each season, 2-3 new teams are promoted from the 2. Bundesliga to Bundesliga.
The full list of the participants in the 2021/2022 Bundesliga season is as follows:
- Eintracht
- Arminia
- FC Augsburg
- Bayern
- Bayer -04
- Borussia Dortmund;
- Borussia Mönchengladbach;
- Bochum
- Wolfsburg
- Hertha;
- Greuther Fürth
- FC Köln
- Mainz 05
- RB Leipzig
- Union
- Freiburg
- Hoffenheim
- Stuttgart
If compared with the 2020/2021 season, two changes have occurred in the standings. Bochum and Greuther Fürth are the newcomers to the Bundesliga. The teams replaced Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen. Both clubs have played continuously in the elite championship for 33 and 41 years respectively. Bochum have not played in the elite championship for 11 seasons.
Tournament policy
The German Bundesliga is held according to the classic UEFA "autumn-spring" system. Teams play in two circles: one at their home field and one as guests the tournament schedule includes 34 rounds of 9 matches each. In total, the clubs play 306 matches during the season. The 2021/2022 season will take place from 13 August 2021 to 14 May 2022.
The results of the games are summed up, and the final standings are drawn up. Germany applies a three-point scoring system. The club receives three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a defeat. Based on the results of 34 rounds, the clubs are placed from highest to lowest total score in the standings. In case of equality of points, additional criteria are used to determine the place in the standings:
- the number of goals scored and conceded in the season;
- the number of goals scored;
- the number of point and goals scored in head-to-head duels;
- the number of goals scored in road games.
If teams are equal by all criteria, a play-off match is appointed. The winner of the match is ranked higher.
Bundesliga clubs fight for the championship, participation in European competitions and preservation of positions. Six clubs from the German championship get into European competitions. Teams ranked 1st to 4th qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage. The fifth club plays in the Europa League group stage, and the sixth in the Conference League qualifying play-offs. The 17th and 18th teams are relegated to the second Bundesliga. The 16th club plays play-offs against the bronze medallist of the Bundesliga-2: one at a home field, one as guests. The winner of the two-round matchup will play in the Bundesliga next season.
Favourites/outsiders
There is virtually no fight for the championship title in Germany. Since 2000 Bayern have won 16 championship titles. For the 2021/2022 season, the Munich-based club is approaching a streak of nine victories in a row. Bayern is the undisputed leader on the way to its tenth championship in a row.
The only Bayern’s rivals in the fight for the title are two clubs: Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. Previously, Borussia was the champion in 2011 and 2012. Now the team lacks stability, as there are many young players in the club. RB Leipzig will have its 12th season. Despite its young age, the team twice became vice-champion and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. There was a change in the coaching staff in the team. Julian Nagelsmann now trains Bayern, and he was replaced by American Jesse Marsh.
Both newcomers Bochum and Greuther Fürth are on the list of top contenders for relegation from the Bundesliga. Arminia, Augsburg, FC Köln and Mainz have not the highest chances of retaining their positions in the elite division.
Transfers
Predictions for the German Bundesliga would be incomplete without taking into account line-up changes. There are many transfers between clubs in Germany, but there are also significant transfers to other championships. Major transfers to other championships include:
- David Alaba, Javi Martinez - Bayern;
- Ibrahima Konate - RB Leipzig;
- Jadon Sancho, Leonardo Balerdi, Thomas Delaney - Borussia Dortmund;
- Leon Bailey, Tin Jedvaj, Demarai Gray - Schalke 04;
- Nicholas Gonzalez - Stuttgart;
- Baptiste Santamaria - Freiburg;
- John Cordoba, Mateus Cunha - Hertha.
In total, Bundesliga clubs have earned €453 million from player transfers.
The team compensated for the loss of a number of star players with entry transfers. In total, the clubs spent €387 million. Among the main newcomers to the league, it is worth highlighting the following:
- Omar Richards - Bayern Munich;
- Josko Gvardiol, Mohamed Simakan, Benjamin Henrichs - RB Leipzig;
- Donyell Malen - Borussia Dortmund;
- Luca Waldschmidt, Lukas Nmecha - Wolfsburg;
- Jesper Lindström - Eintracht;
- Odilon Kossounou, Amin Adley, Mitchell Bakker - Bayer 04.
The total value of the players in the German Bundesliga clubs is €4.21 billion. Main news of the league, player stats, transfer changes are available on the official Bundesliga website, club websites and social media accounts.
Betting trends
The German Bundesliga is a paradise for those who like to bet on total over. Teams score a lot and often. Over the past seven seasons, the average performance is at least 2.75 goals per game. In the last three seasons, teams have scored more than three goals per match. The top scoring teams in the tournament include Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt. FC Köln, Augsburg and Arminia score the fewest number of goals. In the matches with the participation of two Borussia clubs and Bavaria, the total over 2.5 rate was successful in more than 70% of the matches of the 2020/2021 season.
It is interesting to watch the fight between the two best Bundesliga scorers. Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland are claiming victory in the race of the best snipers.
